Simple Electrical Issue Fixes

Simple Electrical Issue Fixes

Dealing with electrical problems can be frustrating, but not all issues need an electrician’s help right away. Sometimes, you can fix the problem with a few simple steps. In this blog, we’ll look at easy tips for resetting circuit breakers, GFCIs, and handling other common electrical issues before calling a professional.

Resetting Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers protect your home from electrical overloads and short circuits. If the power goes out in a part of your house, follow these steps to reset the breaker: First and foremost, find the problem and figure out which circuit has the issue by checking your electrical panel’s labels. Next, turn it off, if the breaker is in the “off” position, switch it to “on.” Then, test the area, after resetting the breaker, check the outlets, switches, or appliances in that area to see if the problem is fixed.

Resetting GFCIs

GFCI outlets keep you safe from electrical shocks in places with water, like kitchens and bathrooms. If a GFCI outlet stops working, do this:  First, find the GFCI then locate the GFCI outlet with the “Test” and “Reset” buttons. Next push the “Reset” button on the GFCI. This should restore power to that outlet and others connected to it. Afterwards test the outlet to make sure it’s working. If it trips again right away, there may be a bigger issue needing professional help.

Replacing Blown Fuses

Older homes may have fuse boxes instead of breakers. If a fuse blows, follow these steps: To start, turn off the main power before touching the fuse box, switch off the main power. Now spot the blown fuse with a dark or broken filament inside. You can now carefully replace the blown fuse with another of the same amperage. Never use a higher-rated fuse, as it’s not safe. Lastly, once the new fuse is in place, turn the main power back on and test the area.

Checking for Loose Connections

Loose connections can be the culprit sometimes. Make sure all plugs and wires are firmly connected, especially at outlets, switches, and lights. A quick check and tightening could solve the problem.

Rebooting Appliances and Devices

Before jumping to conclusions, try rebooting or resetting the appliances or devices that aren’t working. Unplug them, wait a few minutes, and plug them back in. This often fixes minor issues.
