Save the Sea Turtles: Great Lighting Solutions

For those who love spending time at the beach, it may be worthwhile to learn about how we can help preserve the well-being of Sea-turtles.

It’s interesting to note that Sea-turtles can live up to 150 years! These creatures have been around since the time of the dinosaurs. There’re about seven distinct species of Sea-turtles. However, almost all of them are endangered. Did you know, only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood.

What actions can people take to address this situation?

When visiting the beach, it’s important to take simple steps to protect turtles and be mindful of the environment and wildlife. Some of these steps include:

  • Picking up all trash before leaving
  • Clearing any obstacles that could harm hatchlings
  • Filling in holes made by sandcastles/digging
  • Turning off lights to avoid disturbing the natural habitat.
You might be wondering, “How can Anchor Electric fix this?”

Anchor Electric contributes to Sea-turtle protection efforts by ensuring that home lighting is Sea-turtle friendly. When using low-wattage Orange, Red, and Amber LED lighting, it creates a lighting environment that allows hatchlings to distinguish between moonlight and artificial lights. Baby Sea-turtles are naturally drawn towards the light over the horizon. This is why they are known to crawl towards the moonlight.

Additionally, we will assist in directing the light toward the house rather than directly toward the beach. Installing motion detector lights can further minimize unnecessary light pollution by ensuring that the lights only activate when needed. This will reduce the impact on nesting Sea-turtles.

In terms of supporting Sea-turtle conservation financially, our company is committed to donating 10% of its profits from installing safer lighting to the Volusia/Flagler Turtle Patrol. This non-profit organization works tirelessly to protect Sea-turtles in Volusia and Flagler County, Florida.
